Can you tell we had the best time!? Nicole mentioned to me before the shoot that this would be there first photoshoot after being together for 8 years! They were both very nervous in the beginning but after the first pose they were already easing into it. Pro tip: I always start my clients off with a walking shot, my prompt them is to “Hold hands and walk like you are in the mall, chat to each other and try to pretend I’m not here. Even though it’s impossible”. They do it and at first a bit awkward, I then correct a few minor things they can adjust (normally to loosen up tensed shoulders which happens when you are nervous) to make the walk more natural. I do this pose generally 2-3 times until all parties involved (including myself lol) seemed to have settled in. I do this because 1. It’s an action familiar to the couple, and it starts from me standing far away. 2. I’m not overwhelming them immediately with a camera right in front of their faces. 3. It gives the couple sometime to talk and get those glittery thoughts out, and if it’s about something personal (eg. “I have a wegie” “is there something in my teeth”) I’ll be far enough to not hear them in case it’s something they didn’t necessarily want to share with a photographer they just met.
