R to @ChristosArgyrop: At the end of the day, simple economics drive this decision, e.g. not so much the actual cost as kickbacks (e.g. from Hotel Revenues) that potentially flow back to the organizer (the "ripple effect" flows back). Economics will kill this model in the near future.

R to @ChristosArgyrop: The only final thing I will add is that hybrid conferences will not be common. And we just need to get used to that. And price (i.e., complexity of running such a meeting with probabilities of failures) are just not going to be attractive to many organizers.

R to @ChristosArgyrop: Interesting but not sure how generalizable it is. Not all conferences are "thousands" of participants, not all in San Diego. Some of us, who organize a conference, often are scientists who don't really have time to spend on various new tools. We apply for grants, write papers...
