Belatedly, here’s what I read in June! 📚 A new video is up on my YouTube channel discussing all these books. I don't normally read books so far in advance of publication because I'd rather be able to discuss them with other readers once they've come out, but I read Zadie Smith's new novel “The Fraud” because I was invited to interview her in a pre-pub event – it's out Sept 7th. It was such a pleasure discussing it with her and there's a lot to talk about with this rich historical novel about a famous 19th century trial, a now obscure novelist, an unusual love triangle and an abolitionist searching for the truth – plus cameo appearances from Charles Dickens who drops in to make bad jokes. It's very thought-provoking and great fun! Other recent highlights include Catherine Lacey's creative and fascinating story of a widow in search of the real story about her artist wife. I completely fell for Alice Winn's heart wrenching and dramatic tale of two teenage boys’ complex love affair which plays out amidst the hellscape of WWI. Linda Grant tells an engrossing story of a family over the past century which gives a new way of looking at lineage and the stories we create about past generations. Parrish's graphic novel meaningfully contemplates the difficulty of finding real connections in the modern world. Grudova's ode to crumbling cinemas is perverse fun. Patel's novel presents a powerfully told uncomfortable point of view with many insights but offers no exits. Levy's new novel is a pleasure but it strengthens my conviction that she should stick to autobiographical writing. 📚 The Fraud by Zadie Smith – 4.5⭐ Intimations by Zadie Smith – 3.5⭐ The Story of the Forest by Linda Grant – 4⭐ August Blue by Deborah Levy – 2.5⭐ Men I Trust by Tommi Parrish – 3.5⭐ I'm a Fan by Sheena Patel – 3⭐ Children of Paradise by Camilla Grudova – 3.5⭐ Biography of X by Catherine Lacey – 4.5⭐ In Memoriam by Alice Winn – 5⭐ 📚 Have you read any of these?
