#NotVanishingSeattle: Left Bank Books! This month marks the 50th Anniversary of the local institution, located at 92 Pike St #B in #PikePlaceMarket. A radical, anarchist, collectively-operated bookstore, #LeftBankBooksCollective was founded in 1973 by a small group of folks who split off from the University District’s Red and Black Books. The two projects continued as separate but mutually supportive projects until the mid ‘90s, when Red and Black closed. For much of the ‘80s & ‘90s, Left Bank Books Collective expanded to include two other projects: AKA Books, a used bookstore in the U District; and Left Bank Distribution (1980-2001), which provided direct mail-order service of one of the largest selections of radical books, zines & magazines - to individuals & bookstores all over the globe. In the late ‘90s, corporatization, chain stores & rising rents caused these projects to cease operating. #LeftBankBooks now carries over 10,000 new & used books, specializing in anti-authoritarian, anarchist, independent & small-press titles. With close to 70 sections - including queer & trans, feminist, Black, Native, & Latinx studies, immigration studies, race & colonial studies, disability & deafness, poetry, graphic novels, labor history, science fiction, parenting, sexuality, environmentalism, drugs & more. LBB also hosts events like author talks and a periodic open mic, and sponsors the Books to Prisoners (BTP) program providing free literature to prisoners all over the U.S. – you can buy select books at discounted prices at the store, which they then send to BTP. For its 50th Anniversary, LBB is creating a digital & oral history Archive Project to display at the store documenting its 5 decades of history.
