Being on the cover of The New Yorker, one of the most important magazines in the world, is a huge success for ELI, my incredible team, our board members, and our supporters. Thank you all! When I finally got my hands on the hard copy, at a newsstand, and saw our name on the cover, I was moved. I thought about all these years of difficult work, not only in the field but also trying to talk to people and explain how dangerous and destructive environmental crime is for our planet, and for us. I also thought of all the sacrifices made over the years, the almost insurmountable obstacles, the detractors, the sleepless nights. But as pioneers in the use of intelligence to fight environmental crime, there were also lots of successes and achievements. We made it so far because we have the best team in the world, the best board members, and great supporters and donors, smart enough to understand the impact and effectiveness of our complex, long-term work. With this important cover story on The New Yorker, after nearly a year of work with the reporter Tad Friend, we managed to bring the topic of environmental/wildlife crime to millions of people. Too often in our field we converse in a bubble, we preach to the choir. It’s a huge communication and advocacy success! This story on The New Yorker is the best way to celebrate our 10th anniversary!
