I will read whatever @mollybethyoung tells me to read, so when Young Blanks published Miriam by Kate Riley, I bought it. I was intrigued by the About the Author too - “Kate Riley was born in New York City and now lives in rural Virginia. This is her last book.” First AND last book? How does she know?! Immediately yes. Miram grows up in a quirky religious community, the Hof, where elders decide who you can marry, what your job will be, what special desserts to serve for special occasion meals, and where members will live and serve. Miriam’s Hof and other Hofs (there are many locations) are true communes, where almost nothing belongs to any one person. Miriam is a singular character. She doesn’t quite fit in, but she doesn’t loudly rebel. I loved the pacing of this one, and how the traditions of the commune were woven throughout. This is a weird and wonderful book. The edition I have is long sold out, but there is an excerpt in Issue 242 of the Paris Review.
