Hello Booksta! 📖 I’m here today to post about this beautiful debut I’d Rather Burn than Bloom by Shannon C. This book is just so emotional and overwhelming, especially when you know the feeling of losing someone close to you and the sadness and difficulty of acceptance that comes with it. It’s the story of Marisol, a Filipina-American who has always had a complicated relationship with her mother and how she is completely lost when she loses her mother in an accident. It’s very coming of age and shows immense growth in character. Marisol loses herself after her mother’s sudden death, she drinks, she sabotages her studies and future, gets suspended from school and also fights with her best friend. She drowns herself in sorrow but can’t put down the weight of it. The story is written in past and present timelines. It also shows the importance of getting help if you’re facing trauma and mental issues. It talks about themes such as family, culture, immigration , self forgiveness and acceptance through the eyes of Marisol.
