As someone who is half-Japanese and half-Italian, you can imagine my excitement over @tonaridc — the first Wafu (Japanese-style) Italian restaurant in DC, operated by the Daikaya Group. Wafu-Italian is a widely-loved cuisine in Japan that dates back to 1953, when a tiny restaurant in Tokyo called Kabenoana (Hole in the Wall) began serving Wafu pasta. Tonari offers a fresh, innovative take on this niche, culinary concept. On the menu, you will find pasta made with Hokkaido flour imported from Japan. The result is a springier, chewier taste than traditional Italian styles. Tonari also serves an incredible deep-dish style pizza that has the texture of Japanese bread with its distinct sweet smelling, soft, fluffy, and chewy texture. I would say it’s one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had (and I eat a lot of pizza!). The cocktails are also top-rate. My go-to drinks are the Sesame Martini and Mochi Sour. Lastly, be sure to leave room for one of Chef Mary Mendoza’s (@hi_yah_boom) divine pastry creations. Tonari is located at 707 6TH ST NW (Gallery Place/Chinatown). It hours of operations are MON - 5 pm to 10 pm, TUES to SAT - 5 pm to 10 pm, and SUN - 5 pm to 9 pm.
