When my husband and I decided we were going to visit South Germany (Bavaria) several years ago, the first city I thought of was Rotheburg ob der Tauber. I've already been there many years ago, and was so charmed by it that I wanted my husband to see it too. Also known as the Red Castle above the Tauber (river), it is one of the only three towns in Germany that have completely intact city walls. Its well-preserved medieval old town is a draw for tourists from all over the world, and a major stop along the Romantic Road through Bavaria. Interesting fact: around 38% of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, mainly in the eastern half of the town, had to be repaired or rebuilt after being bombed in World War II. Unlike the houses, the eastern walls and towers that were damaged remained relatively intact. Many parts even survived completely because of their sturdy stone construction. In most cases, only the wooden upper portions or roofs of the eastern towers and walls needed to be rebuilt. The older western section from which the medieval town originated and contains most of the town's historic monuments, did not suffer from the bombing.
