The subdivisions you choose to play can help you tell the story in a variety of ways. I often think of subdivisions as the gears of a car, and in usually wanting to create an exciting story, I tend to play them in a certain order. Think of quarters as your first gear, quarter note triplets as your second gear, straight 8th's as your third, and so on. (There’s no reverse in this gearbox). Mix them up with your metronome as your guide and go ahead, feel free to ramble, see where it takes you. Record it, try to play it again and again until it becomes a part of you.
