Amphisbaena, 2023 embroidery, 40 x 30 x 4 cm According to Greek mythology, the amphisbaena was spawned from the blood that dripped from the Gorgon-Medusa. Amphisbaena, a mythological creature with a head at each end, is a personal metaphor for bisexuality. And is strengthened by the fact that it winds around a violet (Viola odorata), a symbol of sapphic love. “For the violet, its story and importance to the queer community can be traced back to Ancient Greece and the poet, Sappho (c. 600 BCE)”. I always felt there were two beings inside of me (hence the name Diana- Matilda), the first one was always attracted to girls, and the second had to protect and hide the other so that I would be accepted by my parents, colleagues, and relatives. The exploration of queer sexuality is an ongoing journey, and it resembles Amphisbaena’s movement. When it advances, it leaves one head behind to serve as a tail, while the other it uses as a head. Conversely, when it needs to move backward, it reverses the roles of the two ends. #embroideryart #bisexuality #threadpainting #contemporaryart #textileart #contemporaryart #bucharestartist #artnow #womanartist #womenempowerment #needlework #needleworksociety #artcollector #mixedmedia #fiberart #contemporarytextiles #textiledesign #textileart #emergentartist #amphisbaena #mysticalcreature #mythology #medusa
