After this morning's vegetation fire near the intersection of Kanan Road and Cornell Way in Agoura Hills, now might be a great time to remind visitors that wildfire danger is real in these parts! Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area's Engine 73 assisted LA County Fire with putting out the 5-acre vegetation fire and, thankfully, the forward rate of spread stopped within the hour of it starting. Here are some tips that residents should know: 🔥 Whether working to create defensible space around your home, just mowing the lawn, or pulling your dirt bike over to the side of the road, you need to be mindful of fire danger. 🔥 Lawnmowers, weed-eaters, chain saws, grinders, welders, tractors, and trimmers can all spark a wildland fire. 🔥 Mow before ‪10 a.m.‬, but never when it's windy or excessively dry. Grinding and welding operations in wildland areas require a permit and 10 feet of clearance. Keep a shovel and a fire extinguisher ready to use. 🔥 Don't drive your vehicle onto dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can start fires you won't even see – until it's too late! 🔥 Keep a cell phone nearby and call 911 immediately in case of fire. Photo: NPS / Mike Wilson.
