Haydn smiled at this: Sir András telling Haydnesque jokes with the @chamber_orchestra_europe. So, the cadenza from Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major comes and he begins by quoting the second movement of Haydn’s ‘Surprise’ Symphony. This movement famously and almost provokingly surprises the audience with a sudden fortissimo in a pianissimo context, a real jump scare. 😂 In a cadenza, the orchestra doesn’t enter until the soloist has finished all of his dangerous affairs. So, Sir András got the orchestra to ‘surprise’ the audience with a big chord in the middle, like in the symphony. You can tell they are having the time of their lives. But also, this tune is associated with these words in a children’s song: Papa Haydn’s dead and gone but his memory lingers on.
