721.12 acres of ancestral lands known as Chokla have been officially transferred to Pala Band of Mission Indian by the federal government. The sacred land located in present-day San Diego County, California will be officially part of the Pala Band of Mission Indian’s reservation. It land is the site of an ancestral village, rock art, and cultural items. The Pala Band is a federally-recognized tribal nation comprised of Cupeño and Luiseño peoples whose 12,000 acres reservation is located along the Palomar Mountain range approximately 30 miles northeast of San Diego. The legislative act, the Pala Band of Mission Indians Land Transfer Act of 2023, was signed into law this past week. Returning the land back to the Pala Tribe is an essential part of the federal trust and treaty responsibilities. Chairman Robert Smith of the Pala Band of Mission Indians said, “With the passage of this legislation, our ancestral grounds, which are central to our spiritual and cultural traditions, will be forever protected as part of the Pala reservation.” #Indigenous #NativeLand #LandBack
