August drifts lazily in amid dreamy golden shafts of long-stretched sunbeams and dancing mosquitoes, while thick froths of hydrangea, hollyhock and rose of sharon blooms line every residential street. Something new hangs in the air however, a sense just beyond the cicada’s song—a certain something that pricks at the sleepiness of summertime to remind us that autumn waits, lurking impatiently, out of sight around the corner. Pumpkins and squash swell under gigantic fuzzy leaves, and heavy dews appear on our morning lawns to glimmer in dawn’s pink light. As we wander, there’s a new crunching underfoot of early fallen leaves already turned brown. The wasps hum a little louder, and zip around with increased freneticism; spiders’ webs begin to gleam in the corners. A palette of golden yellows, white and soft purple wildflowers paints itself across the landscape, heralding summer’s end. Crows caw in cacophonous chorus from treetops and rooflines. Most noticeably of all, there’s a new biting crispness to the evening breeze that has us reaching for light sweaters once more. I stepped away from this app for most of July, needing to trim away nonessential tasks to maximize work time on a few larger projects keeping my pencil to paper, and juggle ongoing autoimmune complications.
