This was me yesterday, on #WomensDay — I went for a hike in the morning, made salads for lunch and spent time with another amazing woman, my friend @jessrossy. It’s been a strange and difficult week in Cape Town. Instead of commemorating the protests of unjust laws that South African women marched against in 1956, Women’s Day events have been cancelled due to taxi violence. The events we were meant to attend yesterday were called off. As were many others. And due to road closures and the threat of violence, many of us stayed home. I’m grateful my home is a place of solace and I’m thankful for my comforts and my friends. But I am far more privileged than the average South African woman. In this time, where we might not have been able to celebrate our Women’s rights and freedom, let’s make an effort to check in on the women in our lives and support South African women where we can: - Share and tag information about local woman-owned businesses on your social-media. - Support local woman-owned brands, products and designs (shop online, gift someone, buy a voucher, share their details). - If you are able to, support or donate to an organisation that supports underserved women and survivors. - Is there a young woman in your team or company who you can mentor or include in workshops, to help advance their career potential? Reach out to them and make it happen. - Is there a woman in your team or company who you can give recognition to? Who you can recommend for a new opportunity or initiative? Take the lead.
