“National socialist Muslims?“ A Hauptsturmführer and other soldiers of the 13th W@ffen-Gebirgs-Division “Handschar“ (Croatian No. 1) eating or waiting for soup that has been prepared in a nearby field kitchen. The Soldiers are wearing the field grey (not the red) version of the fez that were worn by muslim legionnaires of the W@ffen-$$ instead of side caps. They are also wearing smocks in plane tree camouflage. The picture was taken during anti-partisan operation “Unternehmen Wegweiser“. Balkan Mountains, Bosnia, March 1944. The division was one of the mountain divisions of the Waffen-SS, made up of volunteers from the “Independent State of Croatia”, recruited in Bosnia and established and trained near Mittenwald, Germany. The name derives from the handshar, an Arabic scimitar, which became the division symbol, also being woven on the soldiers collar tabs. Since Himmler enthused about the ideological affinity between the NS and Islam, especially concerning anti-judaism, he established the crude concept of so called “Muselgermanen” (🇬🇧 = Muslim Germanics). The idea behind was to win the Turkic peoples as allies and also to keep up the appearance of believing in the “aryan“ race, especially in front of the German people.
