76 years of Independence. And just as many spent trying to embrace our freedom. Trying to be free from the colonial gaze and what they left behind. Their mess, for us to clean. From our land and our minds both. Long before our culture was rebranded and sold back to us, Long before words like ‘sustainability’ and ‘vegan’ became mainstream, Our art already spoke of a living planet. Our foods were already respectful of local ecosystems. Our heritage at its core has always been sustainable. We don’t need a western subculture to partake in our traditions for us to start embracing them. We exist without validation, without boundaries or limitations or restraint. We are heard. We are felt. We are seen. We have long made our presence known. With or without anyone’s gaze, acknowledgement or credit. A rhythm in the heartbeat of the 1.4 billion at home and the 32 million in all corners of the globe, the Indian diaspora, the largest of its kind. This country has always been enough. It’s done enough. It’s given enough. Least we can take is pride. Pride in our culture. In our essence.
