We are excited to announce the second of our two fall shows opening next month: Eureka: New Works by Jane Irish Often considered a historical painter, Philadelphia-based Jane Irish (b. 1955) layers and merges imagery from a variety of periods — from Antiquity to Renaissance to contemporary motifs — into intricate compositions, drawing attention to how violence resurfaces through tradition and aesthetics. This exhibition features six new works from her interiors and ‘cosmos’ series, largely inspired by the artist’s reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Eureka: A Prose Poem.” While Poe insisted that the Universe is governed by a singular repulsive force, Irish insists on rendering this all-encompassing energy visible in order to move beyond it and towards a more peaceful future. “My purpose is to encourage the viewer to let go of the history of atrocity, even as we acknowledge its reality, and move to an ecstatic future […].
