Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop 1970 USA Promo AJP Records FINALLY found a copy of this gem! This has been my most wanted record since I found Fraction - Moon Blood. So much to be said about this one. So, Hoagy Carmichael was an incredible composer who wrote countless masterpieces, including “Georgia on my Mind.” Also, in the late 50s he released an album of children’s songs. Fast-forward to 1970, Hoagie C. jr. worked for Public Television in Boston, and wanted to come up with a children’s show featuring his Dad’s songs. However, he wanted them to me reimagined in a whole new way, with a more relevant sound, so he hired Monty Stark to help arrange them, and some other amazing musicians, including jazz-fusion guitar legend John Abercrombie. This made up “Stark Reality” and this album was the soundtrack for the show. What a wild record to be a soundtrack for a kid’s show. Read the liner notes in the inner gatefold (3rd Picture) on what Hoagy thought if it. The show was like Mr. Rogers, but the music was absolutely out of this world. It’s psychedelic Jazz-Funk, there’s nothing else quite like it. I’m so thrilled to add this to my Wall at home, it’ll be spun very regularly. My kids aren’t aware that strange music exists, they like everything I play, some of their favorites are Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, King Crimson, and Funkadelic, they haven’t been taught that any of it sounds weird, so they will love this one. This record is highly regarded in the hiphop universe, with countless samples. It’s a must have.
