Have you ever wondered where to start with botanical dyes? When I first started out papermaking I very quickly decided that I never wanted to use synthetic pigments or dyes. I wanted an option that was kind to me and to the environment but I struggled to find any information or teaching on how to incorporate botanical dyes into a papermaking practice. So, I set about learning all I could about the chemistry of botanical dye in general and, once I felt I had a good grasp on the foundations I made it my mission to translate the principles and practices into the papermaking process. It took years to develop my methods and recipes and I now have a sustainable papermaking practice I can be proud of and a spectrum of beautiful naturally dyed papers at my fingertips. I recently had the honour of contributing to @herbalacademy 's online natural dyes workshop. The best thing about this workshop is that it covers all the foundations of botanical dyes in general as well as specific applications like... 🥁 how to dye pulp for papermaking.
