Last night I was laying in bed with the girls. I was helping Kenzie pick a show on her iPad and feeding Millie at the same time. Earlier in the day, I had tried a few times to help kenzie engage with her baby sister - I put them next to each other, I brought Millie to whatever space Kenzie was stimming in, and I said a few times “kenzie do you want to see the baby?” So far, kenzie is not interested in the little potato attached to mummy. My thoughts when we came home from the hospital were that Kenzie would need some support when it comes to engaging with Millie. As a family we put the two of them together in safe places and we say Millie’s name, we sign baby and we wait to see if Kenzie wants to join in. I knew it would take a while, and I’m happily waiting a bit longer for the big sister vibes to set in. As I lay with Millie across my lap last night, Kenzie dropped her iPad and looked at us both next to her. Then she leaned over, and hugged us both. With one arm wrapped around me, and one around Millie. And then….then 🥰 Kenzie kissed Millie. The beautiful and unique way that Kenzie does it - with her face smushed up beside someone else’s face - she kissed Millie and left her head against her sisters for more than a few seconds. Intentional. I know better these days than to narrate the situation. I know there are louder things happening than my own voice. I know to let them unravel with their own sounds. I quietly smiled at my girls and gave Kenzie a kiss of her own after she sat back down. She went back to choosing a show. I kept feeding Millie. And the joy in that simple moment was enough to last my whole lifetime.
