Kabir Das was found and adopted as a baby by a poor muslim family. When he was a young boy, a celestial voice urged him to approach Ramanandacharya. Ramanandacharya was a great saint and he rarely came out of his hut to meet people. So little Kabir went and lay down in his path early in the morning when Ramananda would walk to the river to bathe. It was dark and as Kabir expected, Ramananda’s foot accidentally touched him. He exclaimed “Ram, Ram!” when he realised, and Kabir happily went home taking this to be his initiation and Ramanandacharya to be his guru. A few days later, word spread that Kabir was claiming to be Ramanandacharya’s disciple. Ramananda’s other disciples and the muslim community were both unhappy on hearing this. And so Ramananda called Kabir to his hut. He asked him how he could be his guru when he had never initiated him. Kabir innocently told him of the incident at the river saying that the moment he had said Ram’s name and touched him with his feet, he became his guru. Wanting to show everyone Kabir’s greatness Ramanandacharya told him, “If you really have so much faith in Ram’s name, I would like to see you demonstrate it.” Kabir touched the wall of Ramananda’s hut with his hand and the entire hut resounded with Ram’s name! Pleased with the little boy, Ramananda embraced Kabir affectionately and accepted him as his disciple in front of everyone!
