Congratulations to gallery artist Dewey Crumpler on the SFMoMA's recent acquisition of his work, Tulip Memories III! 🎉⁠ ⁠ The tulip emerged into Dewey Crumpler’s work after a visit to Amsterdam with his friend and fellow Bay Area artist, Raymond Saunders. While there he was inspired by their beauty, their corporality, and their movement.⁠ ⁠ Dewey Crumpler analogizes tulips to African bodies; tulips like Black bodies, were taken out of the original environment, subjugated, and turned into an economic commodity. Contemporary African Americans stand as enduring survivors of the peculiar institution of slavery; similarly, the tulip symbolizes resistance and is one of the most resilient flowers, maintaining its physical integrity amidst extreme climatological conditions. With these subtle metaphors, Crumpler addresses the idea of subjugation in America and the way this condition was transformed into a state of cultural self-fulfillment and spiritual development. ⁠ ⁠ Dewey Crumpler is an Associate Professor emeritus of painting at San Francisco Art Institute for over 30 years, where he taught such artists as Kehinde Wiley and Deborah Roberts. Crumpler’s work is in permanent collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, DeYoung Museum, California African American Museum, and Triton Museum.
