There is a thread of sadness that carries over from Marilyn's mother Gladys to Marilyn's spirit herself. Gladys became almost a shadow of herself after she was unable to care for Marilyn, her third child, following a harsh early life. "You know, my mother was very attractive when she was young, but she used to say the beauty in the family was her mother," Marilyn told George Barris. Throughout her life Marilyn carried the fear of becoming mentally unstable like that of her mother and her extended family. Marilyn attributed a good part of Gladys's depression to being left by her man with whom she conceived Marilyn. "I was born according to the records (and my birth certificate) Norma Jeane Mortensen, approximately nine thirty in the morning of June 1st, 1926, at Los Angeles General Hospital. Yes, it's true I was born an illegitimate child. I also spent a part of my childhood in and out of foster homes--and to top it off I landed in an orphanage [from the time] I was nine to eleven, even though my mother was still alive. My mother? Sure I had a mother, doesn't everyone have a mother? About my father? Well, I guess that's what caused my mother to have problems in life.
