Lots of you seemed very surprised by the amount of décolletage displayed by Frances Carr in one of my recent videos! Frances wasn’t alone with her dangerously low necklines, as these were particularly popular in early 17th century Europe. Inspired by the revealing costumes worn at court masques, the Queen Consort, Anne of Denmark, popularised the trend. But paintings of the Queen never seem to do her necklines justice. We know from primary sources that her necklines could reach down to her stomach, and that women would fully or partially display their nipples in these gowns. Thankfully Anne’s funeral effigy survived. Made of wood and modelled to look as accurate as possible, this sculpture would have been dressed in Anne’s own clothes. To save time and money, only the areas visible outside of her clothes were painted, giving us a clear idea of just how much of the royal person was on display! #history #britishhistory #fashionhistory
