Both Prince William and David Beckham sending videos of themselves with daughters before the English #WorldCup2023 match last night was openly sexist. Because both featured only daughters, not sons. Because in 2023, it’s still considered icky that boys might cheer a women’s team. If you don’t believe this, imagine the men’s team in a final: there’s no way those men would feature only sons. Daughters are expected to cheer for men AND women, while sons are not. This issue highlights micro-aggression, which women and people in oppressed groups experience every day. They’re small acts of sexism, racism, homo/transphobia and ableism which, over time, grind down the confidence of people in those groups. They’re “small” on purpose: those who commit them know they won’t get away with overt nastiness. So they chip away with smaller cruelties to keep people in their “place”, and can’t be called out as they retain plausible deniability (“it was just a joke”, “you’re oversensitive”). Yet it’s a huge slap in the face for women, and proves how far there is still to go in women’s achievement. Of course, not attending the final at ALL is a bigger sexist act for William. And for all famous English men (including Beckham) who’d have been at a men’s final with bells on. When we tweeted about this earlier, we were asked why we focus on this issue instead of “something more important”. Yet all the big issues are intrinsically linked so this IS important. Because men’s control has caused oppressed groups to reduce themselves to lesser versions, so fewer vie for influence as they’re scared of even more abuse if in the public eye. Which means we all occupy a planet in dire peril as it’s controlled by men using an iron grip on power they won’t relinquish. Other serious problems ARE crucial to address, but NOTHING will improve unless we also manage awareness of techniques so subtle most remain unaware of the harm. And if you don’t believe THAT, go look at what the Spanish women have put up with to achieve their win, and tell us any of this shit is fair. To repair it, we must understand the methods and campaign hard to make them stop. So let’s go. #PlayLikeAGirl #ToYourBrooms
