Controversy Surrounds Vintage Jeans: Is it a Transitional Model or a Reproduction? In a heated debate among denim enthusiasts, a pair of vintage jeans has sparked controversy over its authenticity after being sold for $1000 in an eBay auction. While some argue that the jeans are a transitional model from the 1940s with remarkable similarities to Levi's, skeptics contend that they are actually 1990s reproductions from Japan. The seller of the jeans claims that many potential buyers are convinced of their construction being nearly identical to Levi's from the 1940s. Moreover, the leather patch on the jeans appears to be authentically aged, adding to the intrigue. 19 bidders and 49 bids in the auction clearly showed the jeans is too good not to miss. Seeking expert opinions, I have consulted several collectors and denim brand owners from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. The consensus among them is that the jeans are likely a reproduction from Japan, possibly created by FULLCOUNT LTD—a renowned denim company and one of the esteemed "Osaka Five," a group of influential denim manufacturers in Japan. Supporters of the reproduction theory highlight that empty rivets and buttons were common features found in numerous replicas produced by small denim brands during the 1990s. Additionally, they point out that the empty red tab with the circle R trademark logo did not exist until the 1950s. Some individuals express caution, considering the unusual features of the jeans as a potential risk factor for buyers. Mikiharu Tsujita, the head designer and owner of FULLCOUNT LTD, also believes that the jeans in question is a replica.
