ARTIST: Architect/artists, #ShusakuArakawa and #MadelineGins⁠ WORK: #ReversibleDestinyLofts Mitaka -- In Memory of Helen Keller⁠ ⁠ Referring to themselves as "coordinologists" (i.e., a person who amalgamates the disciplines of art, philosophy and science, and in doing so, implements creative action), Arakawa and Gins created architecture, sculpture, and drawings throughout their collaborative practice. They believed that changes in bodily perception lead to changes in consciousness, and created environments that challenge the body as a way to overcome bodily expiration and to hence "reverse our destinies."⁠ ⁠ To experience their philosophy in practice, I was honored to receive a tour, and to be able to stay, at a unit in the multiple dwelling lofts that Arakawa and Gins created in #Mitaka Tokyo. The units are filled with surprising elements, that aid in one's overall synesthetic immersion, including a sloped and bumpy floor (for tactility and to experience changes in relative perception), hooks on the ceilings (for functional storage space and to irreverently hang hammocks), communal space, and rooms filled with abundant color.⁠ ⁠ Sending huge gratitude and respect to #MiwakoTezuka and #STLuk who are based in NY and who further introduced me to the practice of Arakawa and Gins, and to #MomoyoHonda and #TakeyoshiMatsuda, who (together with Miwako and ST) are thoughtfully stewarding the legacy of these artists.
