Join us behind the scenes of our conservation studio. Every year, we treat an average of about 30 objects at our studio located inside the museum. One of this Summer’s most exciting projects? The conservation of this stays or ‘corps rigide’ and stomacher, dating all the way back to 1740-60. While the matching stomacher to the stays is often missing today, this object is still fully intact.⁠ ⁠ The original silk taffeta ribbon, however, is currently in poor condition. The aim of the conservation treatment? Preserve the original ribbon and improve the visual appearance of this object. In order to do so, the ribbon will be conserved with a silk crepeline overlay, which has been dyed to closely match the original.⁠ ⁠ Do you recognize the ‘Droguet Maubois’ motif adorning the stays?
