One of our current projects at @hojanueva focuses on the main prey items of small neotropical cats: small non-volant mammals.🐀 This group includes rodents as well as opossums and makes up about 70% of ocelots‘ and margays‘ diets.🌿🐆 Just like most species in the Peruvian Amazon small mammals are extremely understudied and only little is known about them. However, using the wonderful world of genetics we‘ll not only shine more light on what species actually occur in this region but we‘re also working on producing the first extensive identification field guide for this group, making outdated ways of identification (taking voucher specimen) unneccessary and future research more accessible.🔬🧬 We‘ll also look at correlations between habitats and species assamblages/densities.
