A: The eggs came about by accident. I had loads of studies of various things that I’d painted over the years, which we had to flog cheaply at the start of lockdown to help pay the rent. My girlfriend Caz lost her job around this time and I was already in the transitional stage of becoming a full-time painter, but opportunities to exhibit completely stopped. We listed several paintings for sale at slashed prices on Instagram and that’s when things really took off. Several people DM'd and wanted my painting of a fried egg, but it sold straight away to a local guy from Sheffield, so I offered to paint some more. I did a half-dozen, which sold immediately, followed by another batch, and things just snowballed. People from all over the world began commissioning their own eggs and we had to start a waitlist to keep up with demand. Each egg is unique, fried by Caz and painted by me from our kitchen in Sheffield, UK. We've sent eggs all over the world - over 350 to 23 different countries. Painting eggs has given us both a full-time job over the last 3 years and keeps a roof over our heads. It means we can work together from home, with our dog Sid. We share a lot of the process of painting eggs (and other things) via Instagram stories and have met lots of good people along the way, many who have become friends. It's been a bit of a phenomenon and completely unplanned, and not exactly how we thought our life together would pan out (pardon the pun!). We're really humbled by all of the support out there and moved that so many people have taken a sunny-side up made in our kitchen into their own homes. We'll continue to paint eggs while ever people would like one and occasionally release paintings off-the-shelf, listed for sale on the website.
