Watching my current hens grow (they will be 6 months in another week!) makes me a little reminiscent of chickens that once were. I’ve had one flock or the other for over 10 years now. Don’t ask me what happened to all these. It’s a dangerous chicken world out there. Funny how things come and go in our lives. And even funnier when we think about the things we hold onto. Sure, we have physical memorabilia. In fact, I have a box in the top of my closet of random things that are special to me…things that would really confuse the run of the mill profiler. But that one time someone said something off the cuff that made us feel stupid? Or the sense that we’re really not ever going to reach that one big goal we have because we’ve watched other people reach their goals by now? Or the image we have of the way we walk because someone in the 4th grade made fun of us? Oh, we hold onto these things as tight as our phone when we run through the rain. They’ve come to us over time and we cling to them as if they’re meaningful. But they’re not. They’re old clutter. They clutter what could be a healthy outlook. They make today’s good mood sink. They threaten relationships and our potential. They make us question the really happy and special things happening today. And that’s a shame. Because this day, our well-being, the smiles we have, the minds we have, this great big world of endless possibilities, the new Caramel Crunch milkshake @chickfila is about to release…. these are the things that are meaningful today. How about we learn from what was and move on with our life? (Isaiah 43:18-19) Except one thing…I’m just going to hold onto that one pair of jeans.
