Somewhere along the way, death will become less abstract. Maybe as a result of the loss of a loved one, or personal health scares, or just age. It can make us think: Do I believe in the way I’m living my life? What would I change in this moment if I found out I had only a few more months to live? I’d like to trust that: I wouldn’t let fear or guilt disturb my mind or actions. I wouldn’t be fixated on perfection. I wouldn’t choose work over connection. … areas in which I still find challenging. Because the reality is, tomorrow isn’t promised. It never has been and never will be… even when tomorrow becomes today. This thought process isn’t meant to scare us into being afraid we’re going to die tomorrow. But it is meant to provoke us into not taking today for granted. It isn’t meant to create a sense of doom or hectic behavior, but rather to inspire intentional living. For me, instead of descending into an existential darkness, I try to perceive our inevitable end as a driving force for breath.
