I’m sure many of you have seen the news that last week Tokitae (Lolita), the last captive Southern Resident orca, passed away after five decades at the Miami Seaquarium. This sad reality came not long after a decision was made to return her a to a sea pen in her home waters of the Pacific North West. Though she won’t benefit from the plan to bring her home, she remains a catalyst for change. Her life highlighted the challenges of keep whales and dolphins in captivity, fueling @whalesorg’s determination for a harm-free life for all whales and dolphins. Many people are waking up to the fact that whales and dolphins are too intelligent, too social, too mobile, and just too big to ever be OK in a captive environment. A massive 75% of the UK public think it’s cruel to keep whales and dolphins in captivity for human entertainment. Some countries have already made captivity illegal, and WDC has developed a roadmap for an ‘ethical phase out’ of captivity that would make this generation of captive whales and dolphins the last.
