In my stories I asked about the challenges you face when you are painting flowers from real flowers or reference images. I got a lot of great (and important) questions. This one is about reserving the white spaces of paper when painting with watercolors. Leaving unpainted areas of the paper not only adds freshness and luminosity to your subject, it helps to represent a 3D subject on a 2D surface by producing a feeling of distance and depth. You are essentially playing with light and shadow by including white spaces in your painting. The white represents the brightest part of your flower (or the part where more light falls). And by adding color next to your white you are indicating shadowed areas. This contrast helps you create a dynamic and a more visually pleasing flower without painting every single petal. Let me know if this was helpful! And if you haven't answered already, tell me - what do you struggle with when you are painting flowers? Especially when you try to paint from real flowers or reference images. #paintwithsush #watercolorflorals #botanicalillustration #loosefloralwatercolor #loosepainting #paintingflowers #arttutorial
