Vega Sicilia Unico 1968 🍷 In this September issue of la Revue du Vin de France (RVF), you will find the article that Jeremy Cuckierman and I wrote following our vertical tasting of 40 vintages of Vega Sicilia in magnums. This is an opportunity for me to come back to an incredible anecdote from this tasting. Among the gems tasted, the legendary 1968 vintage was one of the most anticipated. It was also the first time I had the chance to taste it. And this is where disaster happened: The first magnum served is corked and the bottle is so rare that there is no replacement! Bummer…Everyone was obviously disappointed but how can you complain in the middle of this sumptuous paradise of Unicos? The tasting continues and three hours later, new glasses stamped "1968" are placed on the table. Pablo Alvarez used his network and managed to find a collector in Barcelona who still has a few 1968s in bottle. These are immediately taken by taxi to El Cellar des Can Rocca in Gejone (two hours driving) where the tasting takes place. amazing. Oh ! sorry ! I forgot to describe the wine : The wine is reserved in the bottle but it still presents a superb powerful nose of red fruits, Morello cherries, and cold blond tobacco. In the mouth, it has the balance between finesse and aromatic power of the very great wines with an interminable persistence.
