Ep. 13 - REVEALING why she speaks like that😉 . . Paan is a mouth freshener made out of betel or areca nuts wrapped in betel leaves together with slaked lime. There are many variations with rose petal jelly, fennel seeds, cardamom seeds, fresh crushed ice and many many more add-ons. Everyone has their own unique preference as per their taste. Paan is probably the one of the biggest symbols of Banaras. The people of Banaras love Paan and can eat it one after the other. When you see a Banarasi with red lips, that’s most probably not liptstick, that’s the Paan (with kathha) effect 😉 This is the Banarasi dialect of Hindi. It is a mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri (another Indian regional language prevalent in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar). The Banarasi dialect is quintessential to be a Banarasi. This series will showcase some of the most essential expressions in this dialect along with the cult mannerisms of Banarasis (people of Banaras). To be a Banarasi, Basil herself needs to learn these expressions to show you that even a part of you can become Banarasi!
