The Hawai‘i Animal Rescue Foundation (@hawaiianimalrescuefoundation) is providing food, shelter, and medical care for owned dogs, cats, and farm animals evacuated from fire zones. Many families who have been displaced by the fires into transitional housing are not able to keep their pets with them, and HARF has committed to caring for these animals as long as is needed, or finding them a new forever home if requested, with the support of a grant from the Maui Strong Fund. When the need for shelter was at its peak, on August 21, HARF was housing around 100 pets, and currently has about 50. Dawn Pfendler, HARF CEO and co-founder, says, “Every animal we’ve taken in so far has been in from a family that has lost their home or been semi permanently evacuated from the Lahaina area. They didn’t know where they were going to stay, what they were going to do. We’ve been able to give their pet a soft landing place, so they don’t have to worry about their pet, and know that it was safe, and they can come visit their pet anytime they want.” In addition to its boarding services, HARF is also traveling with veterinarians into the Lahaina community to treat animal medical needs on-site, and is working closely with the Maui Humane Society to coordinate response efforts.
