. 🎨 Grand Canyon Celebration of Art - Begins September 1, 2023. > grandcanyon.org/coa/ JOHN D. COGAN Creeping Shadows of Evening Acrylic — 30 x 24 inches Painting Brahma and Zoroaster Temples is always a joy for me as these two landmarks are iconic formations, recognized and viewed by nearly every visitor to the Grand Canyon. Their contours speak to the viewer, “We are the Grand Canyon!” One of my favorite (and often-painted) views is in the afternoon, looking along the rim from the outcrop just east of Hopi Point. The late afternoon and early evening light presents the artist with shadows that creep along the cliffs and outcrops, slowly moving the canyon into late evening and then into the quiet of night. The colors are drawn out of every part of the spectrum from the cool shadows of blue and purple to the glowing peaks and cliffs of reds, oranges and yellows, and even the Tonto Plateau’s greens. In the distance a thunderstorm spreads a bit of much-needed rain onto the deserts east and north of the Canyon. —John D. Everyone will have the opportunity to watch them paint as they seek to represent the shifting light and shadow, amazing landforms, and extraordinary colors of this vast landscape.
