Hyaluronic acid is a humectant which means that it draws water from your dermis into your epidermal skin cells. It’s a very effective humectant. However, IMO (and I’ve been told previously that others share this opinion) it’s a little overhyped. 💧Glycerin and polyglutamic acid do pretty much the same thing as HA, with PGA also inhibiting an enzyme (hyaluronidase) that breaks down your skin’s natural HA. Less hyaluronidase activity = more HA 💧N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) is required for your body to produce HA (it’s a HA precursor). Increased NAG = Increased HA It’s also got other benefits for your skin, like reducing pigmentation and mildly exfoliating skin. 💧Centella Asiatica increases the production of glycosaminoglycans like HA as well as inhibiting hyaluronidase. It’s also anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, great for reducing redness, increases the antioxidant content of your skin (vitamins A, C,& E), boosts collagen production, and helps to heal skin. 💧Beta-Glucan is allegedly 20x more hydrating than HA (although I can’t find a reliable source for this - plenty of sources that it is excellent at hydrating skin though). It’s also antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and healing. So should you ditch the hyaluronic acid? Not necessarily! If it works for you then please be reassured that it is a fantastic humectant. However, if you’re one of the people who doesn’t get on too well with hyaluronic acid (formulation matters so it might be that you just haven’t found the right product yet) - these are great alternatives - especially if you’re looking for something that does more than just hydrate skin.
