Bassline of the week #27. Up next is an absolute banger as per usual. Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body” from his 2002 debut solo album, “Justified”. Flashback to 2002. Yours truly was a young lad in middle school. I was a music lover at the time but had never touched a bass guitar. My relationship with music at the time consisted of singing in the youth choir at church, listening to CDs on my discman, and religiously watching MTV after school with a VHS recorder trying to capture my favorite music videos. Yall remember this video? Where were you in 2002? Remember when MTV had music? Justified was produced almost entirely by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo AKA Neptunes, at Master Sound Studios in Virginia Beach VA. It debuted at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sold 439,000 copies in the first week. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. For context, the 8 Mile soundtrack was #1 to JT’s #2. The album went on to be certified 3x platinum selling nearly 4 million copies in the US. There are some amazing clips on YouTube of Pharrell and JT in the studio together working out the material for this album. Thanks to my man @djharrisonrva for hipping me to the documentation. I had a hard time nailing down exactly who recorded this bassline or how it was recorded… I have seen pics of Chad with a bass guitar and I know he is a multi instrumentalist, but I’m honestly inclined to think that this line was played on a keyboard using a sample of a bass guitar. The notes are so even and clean that it wouldn’t surprise me. In any case it’s a killer line that really defines this song. The sound is definitely reminiscent of a bridge pickup on a J bass so it was a no brainer to pick up my trusty Fender Jazz for this one. Can anyone out there confirm who or what recorded this iconic line? Been getting some amazing suggestions for this series lately, please chime in with your requests for BASSLINE OF THE WEEK. @justintimberlake @pharrell @chadhugo #justintimberlake #neptunes #bass #basslines #fenderjazzbass #rockyourbody #2002 #justified #dope #tight #thx #basslessons
