✨why you should visit the Westman islands✨ Visiting the Westman Islands was maybe our favorite day of our trip to Iceland and it should be on your list! It’s ~2 hours from Reykjavík in the southern part of the island. You’ll need to take a ferry to get there and we highly recommend booking ferry tickets in advance. Here is why you should visit: 👉beluga whale sanctuary: there’s a sanctuary that rehabilitates beluga whales and other wildlife native to the area that you can visit! 👉 largest puffin colony in the world: if you want to see puffins, this is the place to see them! The largest puffin colony (which also happens to be the windiest place in Europe) is on the Westman Islands 👉 interesting history: Vikings were really prominent on the island. We highly recommend taking a tour with @eyjatours to learn more about the history and check out @herjolfstown to discover more about the folklore and history on the island. 👉 the views: there’s lots of short hikes to do around the island that offer panoramic views of the landscape. There are famous homes on the surrounding islands as well as a singular home on an entire island that you can get some good views of 👉 seaweed beer: there’s a brewery on the island called The Brothers Brewing that makes a beer with seaweed that’s actually really good 👉 volcanos: the islands are super volcanic and you can hike a volcano on the main island! There was an eruption in 1973 that forced residents to evacuate (everyone survived).
