In 2015, global leaders came together at the United Nations and announced the #GlobalGoals (also known as the Sustainable Development Goals), which included a common goal to eliminate all violence against women and girls in the private and public spheres by 2030. But more than halfway to the deadline, gender-based violence remains on the rise around the world, exacerbated by war, climate change, and COVID. One in every 3 women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and now rates of femicide are going up in many countries, particularly for trans and queer women who are especially at risk. Next month, as world leaders will come together again at the 2023 UN General Assembly, how do we get closer to these 2030 goals? With key stakeholders in town for #UNGA, the Ford Foundation will host a curated event Free Future 2023: Preventing Gender Violence Around the World on September 14. Thought leaders, public figures, and organizers will join together to raise public awareness about the increasing violence women, girls and gender-nonconforming people face globally in many forms—and the work we can all do to help prevent this. Together, we can all build a future free from violence.
