#Repost @drcmvmom 🙌🏽🙌🏽 ・・・ Hot off the presses! The @healthychildrenaap just published Hearing Assessment in Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Recommendations Beyond! Im thrilled to see inclusion of #asl and #multimodalcommunication as recommendations to support language development in early childhood. Families should be encouraged to embrace all forms of communication early on as the child figures out what feels right for them. The goal is to #endlanguagedeprivation in DHH childreN, especially those who do not have typical access to sound. For instance, in our case Odessa was born completely deaf and we were asked to choose oral vs signed language for her at 3 months old. She eventually got cochlear implants but until her brain learned to interpret that electrical input as words, she was without language (~2 years). Hindsight is always 20:20 and our family’s journey has been complicated, but these new recs warm my heart and give me hope. This is #inclusionanddiversity “Evidence of the health benefits of signed and spoken language bilingualism continues to accrue.46 Families need not be constrained into choosing a single modality for their child’s communication. When hearing status changes during the period of first language acquisition (birth to age 5 years), the focus should be on the child meeting language acquisition milestones at the appropriate age to optimize brain development and prevent language deprivation. Developmental surveillance with milestones that include ASL will support families who choose bilingual language acquisition with signed and spoken language”
