Expanding my geography! Thrilled to be creating portraits for two families from Japan. While meeting with my beautiful sitter I realised once again how important it is to have real-life portrait sessions. Artists who skip them miss the essential part of the process - a chance to get a charge of inspiration from designing their own compositions. Something unique which did not exist before, not even in someone’s photos. For me the initial set-up stage is the most interesting and creative part of the process. The subsequent studio work is only an attempt to re-create my initial vision, while trying to maintain the level of inspiration which I experience during the real life meetings. I know that landscape painters feel the same way when they observe nature in real life during plein-air trips. Or still life painters, when they set up the compositions with real objects, guided by their own taste and imagination. Copying supplied photos can produce technically good artworks, but never generate the same feelings.
