Hey swimmers! How to maintain alignment during the breath. 1️⃣ Firstly, don’t turn your head. Aim to simply have your head join your body rotation. 2️⃣ Now, imagine you have an invisible rod going through the top of your head through your torso past your feet. In alignment terms, this is your plum line. Everything in your body lines up along this line and I aim to keep this line pointed at the wall ahead of me. When I’m breathing, I imagine that at the top of my head, I have a laser pointer and it’s fixated on a single point / target on the wall at the opposite end of the pool. So when I breath, I want to try to keep that laser fixated on that point at all times. 3️⃣ One goggle in, one goggle out. If you close your top eye your bottom eye should still see under the surface. 4️⃣ Breath in the pocket. This one takes time to master and requires you to be moving through the water well. But when you have alignment and you’re moving, a small bow wave forms on your head and where the wave goes down by your mouth there’s a small space there behind the bow wave where the water level is lower than the rest of the surface, and you can breath there. Note you will get a little water in the mouth every time so you need to be comfortable breathing with a little water in your mouth. Important: Maintaining alignment during the breath should feel natural. It shouldn’t be forced like trying to press the temple down into the water to avoid lifting the head.
