If I'm being entirely honest, I'm not sure what we were hoping our Highland Fling would give us. It was something we'd talked about doing one day, but never did we expect it to be so soon. It escalated from conversations and cheeky pervs on Rightmove after a few glasses of wine, to handing all our money over to a solicitor incredibly quickly. Keeper's Cottage had sold when we went on the market. For reasons I'll never know, it was the only house where I emailed the estate agent to ask to be kept informed if the sale was to fall through. Which it did at the eleventh hour. It ticked precisely none of our boxes. We didn't know the area. Paul hated cottages. Neither of us wanted a project. We offered, because frankly it was about the only thing we could get to see at the time, let alone stand a chance of having an offer accepted. Funny how things work out. And funny how all the best bits are those simple things that I would never have dreamt of adding to my wish list. Imagine saying to an estate agent: "I'm looking for a cottage that will have a lovely winter scene, where you'll get to see the northern lights, it must have lots of passing sheep and coos and big, huge skies with fabulous sunsets.
