#tb 1947 & today: Looking north at W 8th St & MacDougal St in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. . Apart from the planting of a sidewalk tree, this stretch of West 8th Street amazingly remains practically unchanged nearly 80 years later! Also, take note of the multiple awnings on the windows of the 2 buildings on the left side of the 1947 image. Prior to the advent of modern air conditioning, awnings were essential in helping to keep building interiors cool by providing shade for windows and blocking out sunlight.
