Student nurses Moduph Marke from Freetown, Sierra Leone and Rebecca solanke of Lagos, Nigeria hold a new born baby during a midwifery course at the National Training School for Midwives in Woolwich, London. NOTE: Rebecca Solanke is the one holding the baby. Date: 5th February 1948. Chief (Mrs.) Rebecca Olubukola Solanke was for many years a Health Visitor at the University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH). As part of her duties, she regularly followed up children born at the U.C.H. especially whose mothers died at childbirth. In the course of her work, she noted that motherless babies discharged home to relatives had very slim chance of surviving. She observed that such children died partly due to poverty but more importantly ignorance in the care of babies deprived of normal maternal care and affection. Thus, the need for a home for these newly born motherless babies became more apparent to her. In 1960, she took into her care, in her own home, the first motherless baby. By 1961, Mrs. Solanke had succeeded in getting Mrs. Ogunfowora and some of her Nigerian colleagues at the U.C.H interested in her pet project which from then on was keenly supported by them, both morally and financially. With the generous support of His Excellency Brigadier R.A Adebayo, the then Military Governor of the old Western State of Nigeria and the people of Ibadan, a piece of Land was donated to the Home in the present site in 1966; thus the foundation stone of a new building was laid on Saturday, the 29th July 1967 by Brigadier R.A Adebayo who two years later officially declared opened the completed building of the home on 1st March 1969 Image Credit: (Photo by Daily Mirror/Mirrorpix/Mirrorpix via Getty Images) Text Credit: Ibadan Home for the Motherless Babies Home #ASIRIMagazineAT10 #historical #digitalarchives #digitalstorytelling #RebeccaSolanke #ibadan #nigeriahistorymatters #MotherlessBabiesHome #Heritage #Charity #photooftheweek #happynewmonth❤️
